how coaching works for individuals

Customized coaching reflects the diverse needs of people at various phases in their career, from senior and mid-level leaders to those in high-impact, individual contributor roles. It can be an impactful development and support strategy for anyone who is contemplating or ready to make a career or leadership transition.

  • Individual coaching, whether focused on leadership, executive coaching, professional or career coaching, is a confidential 1:1 process between an individual and coach only (no other participants).

  • Sponsored 1:1 coaching is essentially individual coaching. The only difference is that the investment is covered by a third party vs. the person being coached – usually the coachee’s employer, who maintains the contractual arrangement with the coach.  It is still confidential, although the coachee’s manager and the HR business partner may be involved in certain agree-upon discussions (e.g. there may be a meeting that includes the coachee, his/her manager, and coach defined as part of the process, such as to discuss development plan priorities).

  • Integrated coaching is a type of sponsored 1:1 coaching that is designed as part of, or following, a leadership program. This coaching occurs at a pivotal time, helping participants stay focused on adopting new behaviors. Coaching is targeted to build on specific 360-degree feedback and/or program skills. Consequently, it accelerates adoption of skills and productive habits in real life situations. This service can multiply your investment in leadership development by increasing the likelihood of sustainable behavior change and improved performance through coaching.

You already have all the answers. I'm just here to help you find them, understand them and use them as you move forward toward your goals.

“As someone looking to switch professional roles and industries, but not having used a professional coach before, I was unsure what to expect. Janis stepped in and clearly explained her process to me, all along making sure things were moving at a pace that I wanted. Through her coaching, she really helped me clarify the direction I wanted to go, find my target industry as well as target roles. Her questions were unique and got me to think outside of the box. With her help, I was able to land the role that I wanted at my desired company in about 6 weeks! Working with Janis has lit a fire in my personal development to help me recognize my weaknesses and have a greater use of my strengths.”

from the beginning,

we define the overarching intentions and needs. Individual coaching sessions of 60-120 minutes take place in person, by phone or videoconference.  We’ll determine the frequency and number of sessions based on your goals. The duration of your coaching program depends on the nature of your challenges.

  • For “on-demand” needs, we may be able to work through a specific challenge, establish goals and action steps, and make progress over 3-4 sessions.

  • Short-term coaching generally takes from 1-3 months; it’s intended to provide immediate feedback and help develop a plan to address priority development needs.

  • Longer term, in-depth coaching for leadership or career development typically requires months and involves a close, long-term relationship. I’ll help you gain feedback and perspective, understand your personal brand, focus your development goals, and recognize what you bring to an organization. After that, we look at how I, and/or others, can help you take the required steps to build your skills, confidence, and accountability to accomplish your goals. program

Short-term coaching may involve steps 1-3 only; more in-depth, longer term coaching would involve all 5 steps.
